Thee Checkers Speech Rhetorical Analasis - 1483 Words

Checkers, The American Dog in Disguise: A Rhetorical Analysis of Nixons Address In The Checkers Speech, Richard Nixon responds to criticism regarding an alleged secret fund. At this time, 1952, Nixon was running for vice president with presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower was enjoying enormous popularity when the rumor surfaced one month before the election. Nixon was accused of accepting a supplemental salary of $18,000 dollars, contributed by a group of supporters back in his home state of California. There were also rumors that Eisenhower would drop Nixon from the ticket. So Nixon was forced to come up with a remedy for the untimely situation. Not only did he have to convince the American people he was†¦show more content†¦Nixon was basically stating that he was a proven enemy of communists and that the democrats assisted them. Finally, Nixon supports Eisenhower by showing that he is qualified to clean up corruption and deal with communists. If one looks closely at Nixons speech it has a very easy, logical pattern to follow, and allowed him to achieve every goal that he set for himself. One of his main intentions of his speech was to attack the democrats, but at the same time make republicans, including himself, look good. After Nixon built up his own credibility, he began to bash the democrats. He implied that Stevenson and Sparkman had something to hide, unless they do as I did and make their finances pubic. Nixon encourages his audience to believe a lot of things that may or may not have been true. One, that he has done nothing morally wrong with using the $18,000 fund because he made his finances public. Two, he is an honest man, and he deserves to be retained as Vice Presidential candidate. Three, rich men such as Governor Stevenson who inherited a fortune from his father should not deserve to be president. But, a modest man such as himself or Eisenhower, a common man that God must have loved, should have th at chance at office. In general Nixon said that Eisenhower and he, the republican candidates, are qualified to lead the country and democrats are not. Therefore, he only left the American public with the option of electing the

The 1944 Education Act and its ramifications to date The purpose of this essay is to identify the features of the 1944 Education Act and its ramifications. The state of education prior to the 1944 Act will be mentioned and how it mirrored society as a whole. A critical appraisal of justifications for selection and comprehensivisation, as a successor to the tripartite system, will be addressed. This paper will also provide an explanation of the selection process and the arguments and problems that relate to it. I will be analysing the sociological ideas and will be discussing post war trends and events in Britain and education in particular and evaluating how issues of ability, IQ, class, gender and or/ethnicity have affected change.†¦show more content†¦Few technical schools were established and the secondary modern became the cinderellas of the education service despite providing for the majority of the school population.† (Roger 1986: 3) This extract shows that new system didn’t manage to reduce the social division it merely replaced it with a newer form of social division. The nature/nurture debate is neither unique nor particular to the 1944 Act, but it is something to be addressed. Nature, suggesting your intelligence is inherited from your parents and nurture, the belief that learning is affected by the home and the school environment. Relating the debate to the 1944 Act, brings to our attention the difference in education between social classes. The upper and middle class children would have definitely had advantage over the working class children, in terms of cognitive development, as their parents would have been well educated and able to pass on far greater knowledge. They also would have had better living conditions and quieter homes to concentrate on homework. The working class tended to have many children, shared bedrooms would have been common, which was not the ideal learning environment. The philanthropic aspects of the act were very much linked to the Second World War. Maintaining inventory levels, managing the WIP levels and raw materials procurement and dealing with raw materials and quality control are some of the functions which are being executed within the procedure of operations management. Additionally it also includes directing, outlining, controlling, the different methodologies within the business entity. The below summarized is analysis which has been executed over the concept of operations management for BHP Billiton (Heizer, 2016). The business corporation is a multinational brand name in the sector of Anglo-Australian multinational mining, metals and petroleum. The business corporation is a dual-listed public company which is headquartered in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Moreover the further report has been analyzed on challenges which can be faced by the operations management section within the organization. Impact of challenges on business The below described are some of the operational issues which can be faced by BHP Billiton: Challenging technologies Technological modification and up-gradation is the factor which has been considered as very much empirical for each and every business corporation. Technology is the term which has various impacts on the business operations and also allows enjoying both the tangible and intangible benefits (Oksbdc 2015). These benefits aid the firm in attaining better productivity, quality products, and customer satisfaction through better delivery of products etc. As every coin has two phases, same is here, there are both positive and negative impacts of the technological changes within the business corporation. The below presented are the issues of the challenges which can be faced by BHP Billiton: Integration issues: It is not necessary all the time that the new technology released will match the older or to the existing systems. And this will lead to build a double data entry in the systems which will look in multiple places (Casey 2015). So integration of the new technology with the older one can be proven as a challenge for BHP Billiton. Backup and disaster recovery challenges: If accidentally any of the file gets deleted, due to the power cut, server crash or any other technological miss-happening then the business entity can suffer the problem of data loss. So having a data recovery system is very much essential for the entity and the same can come-up as an issue for the corporation. Continued globalization of markets including 1st and 2nd world entrants Globalization of markets means turning the marketing level to the international regions or extending the limits to all over the globe (Slack, 2015). The concept provides the markets with number of international platforms to deal in which in-turn enhances the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the products and services. This all is due to the emergence of improved and contemporary mechanisms and methodologies. Modernization and globalization are the key players of the concept which aids the markets and the business environment of the business corporation. The below mentioned are some of the challenges which can be faced by BHP Billiton while going international: While trading in the international markets the business entity will have to cope-up with the political environment of the different regions. For instance, the business entity will have to face a challenge as the tax laws and other norms of each and every region in which BHP Billiton is dealing (Krajewski, Ritzman and Malhotra, 2013). Moreover, the business entity will also have to face the challenges due to cultural differences. Changing customers expectations Customers are considered as the king of the markets and hence their needs and requirements are one of the significant factors in influencing the business entity and the operations within the same. The products and services are designed and developed after considering the requirements of the consumers which enable the entity in accomplishing the desired objectives and targets. The demand and supply of the products and services totally depend on the consumer preferences, their likes, expectations, income levels etc. These are the relevant and significant factor which is considered as liable in influencing the success and growth of BHP Billiton. The below mentioned are some of the challenges which can be faced by the customers expectations: The customer using a brand always has an expectation of an upgrade and innovation. This, if fulfilled by the business corporation will aid he business entity in the form of number of benefits. But if the firm fails to fulfill the expectations the entity may suffer severe losses such as a decrease in the market share as the consumers will try to switch to the competitors brand. This will also bring the sales bars to a diminishing level (Hitt, Carnes and 2016). Changing job designs Job design is the concept which is concerned with the outlining and organizing the duties and responsibilities so as to accomplish the desired objectives for the business organization. The process also comprise of the methods and connections that are considered as very much essential for a success of a job. Job design have various impacts on the business organization and its operations. The below mentioned are some of the challenges which can be faced by BHP Billiton due to changing job design: If the employees at BHP Billiton are performing and are feeling frustrated due to challenging job design ten there can be a development of demotivation in the employees and a lack of interest can rise. This will be proven problematic for the business entity (Khanna, 2015). Employee turnover ratio and retaining the same will incur heavy expenses for the firm and will be proven as a challenge. Moreover, frequent shifting of the employees develops frustration in their job routine and which can also be the reason for the loosening of the interest and determination in the work. This will have negative impacts over the business organization. Quality management Quality of the products has been considered as one of the significant factor which will drag the business entity to the top of success and growth in the business environment. This variable is an empirical aspect which aids the business entity in providing customer satisfaction (Brown, Bessant and Lamming, 2013). This factor if positively attained will be proven beneficial for the business entity as it aids in enhancing and increasing the market share, building the goodwill, brand equity etc. and the same will be in the case of BHP Billiton. But this all can turn to negative and will impose number of negative impacts over the business entity and the same demonstrated as follows: As quality of the products is the first component and is a priority which is preferred by the consumers. And if BHP Billiton fails to adhere with the management of quality of the product and the management of the same then the business entity will have to face number of negative consequences. For instance, the consumers will be un-satisfied and will try and think to switch to other brands (Mahadevan, 2015). This will bring down the market share, sales graph to a diminishing level and will so tend the company to suffer losses. And all this can develop the concept of quality management as a challenge for the business corporation. Global manufacturing Global Manufacturing is the concept which comprises of the process and procedures under which the business entity produces the components, sub-assemblies, assemblies, and finished products for another company (Bianchi and hlstrm, 2014). This done by leveraging raw material, manufacturing capabilities, cost, and an efficient supply chain that spans all over the globe. This process can be proven very much disadvantageous for the business entity in some cases. For instance, in case of BHP Billiton the business entity can send the mining products for purification and other refining purposes to some other organization. This can be proven expensive. This will bring an increase in the cost of goods sold which will automatically increase the price of the goods. This can tend to a decrease in the demand for the products and will also affect the market share of the business corporation. Impact of success on the operations within the business organization (BHP Billiton) The operations are the functions and the activities which are executed within the organizational structure. The success and growth of an entity totally depends and are also connected on the same (Schwarz, Hall and Shibli, 2015). There are various operations which are considered as very much significant in the path of the success and growth. The below mentioned are some of the operations which are inter-linked with the business entity and are liable in influencing the success and growth of the business corporation: Goods and services design: The products are the outcomes which enable the business entity to earn the revenues and also aid them in attaining the desired objectives and goals. The goods and services are the players which are held liable for influencing the growth and success of the business. Products are the offerings which are served by the firm after considering the requirements and needs of the consumers (Brown et al., 2013). The satisfaction level of the consumers depends on a number of components of the products. One of an empirical factor of the products is the design of the same. The design of the product defines the identity which develops a distinct image of the same in the market (Schnsleben, 2016). Moreover, if BHP Billiton is focusing on the design of the products then it will be aiding the business entity to develop a distinct image of the brand. This will help the entity in sustaining and gaining a competitive advantage over the competitors. The below mentioned are some of the factors of the prod ucts design which aids the success and growth of the business entity: Increase in the customer satisfaction level: The products and the services, if designed according to the demands and requirements of the consumers will provide them satisfaction. The more the satisfaction level, the more will be the demand for the nest time. Moreover, the consumers will be brand loyal which will be demonstrating a hike in goodwill (McCrie, 20150. This will be proven beneficial in the path of success and growth of the business entity. Increase in the market share: The product design aids the business entity in attracting and influencing the consumers. The demand for the product depicts the market size of the business entity (Akalin, Huang and Willems, 2016). And as the product entity experiences an increase in the demand the market size ad share of the corporation will be high. So the BHP Billiton should design and develop the products for satisfying the consumers so as to increase the market demand which will finally result in an enhancement in the market share. An increase in the market share defines a Increasing brand equity and goodwill: The customer satisfaction level have a direct link with the brand equity and goodwill of the firm (Fernie and Sparks, 2014). The more the customer satisfaction the more will be the brand equity and the goodwill. A high level of goodwill demonstrates the stability of the business entity and a stable business corporation is understood to be a successful one. Supply chain design: Supply chain has been considered as an integral part of any of the business corporation and is also essential in the success, growth and customer satisfaction (Wisner, 2016). The below mentioned are some of the benefits for the customers which in-turn will reflect in the success and growth of BHP Billiton: The customers have an expectation of the correct product to be delivered and assortment of the same should be done which will be done, which brings enhancement in the satisfaction level. Moreover the orders should also be delivered at the right location and also the time of the delivery should be perfect (Bamford et al., 2015). The after sales service is an additional feature of the process which is required to be adhered by the company for increasing the satisfaction level of the consumers. All of the above mentioned are the points which enhance the satisfaction level of the consumers and will contribute in the success and growth of BHP Billiton The supply chain brings varied range of cost to a diminishing level which are presented as below: Brings purchasing cost to a decreasing level: The retailers are largely depended on the mechanism of supply chain and for a quick delivery of the expensive products so as to avoid holding costly inventories in the stores and outlets any longer that required necessary (Galliers and Leidner, 2014). Decreases production cost: There is a dependency of the manufacturers on the delivery of the materials to the manufacturing units so as to avoid the material shortages and that would bring the production process to a stop. The raw material sources from providers are changed to transitional items and completed products through assembling offices (Anderson, Anderson and Parker, 2013). The completed items are sent to conveyance focuses and from that point to retailers and at last to clients. Nonetheless, the supply chains, particularly of vast makers, can have essential, auxiliary, and tertiary providers moreover. Resource management The resources are the modes which can be utilized by the business entity for revenue generation. BHP Billiton is the multinational corporation which has a wide range of resources and the same are segmented in various divisions. For instance, tangible and intangible resources, is the main segmentation for the business corporation which can be proven beneficial for executing and adopting the approaches of resources management (Ferguson and Souza, 2016). These resources are considered as very much significant for the business entity and are also very much liable in contributing towards the growth and success. The resource management involves the adoption of strategies and approaches which will enable the business corporation to make the optimum utilization of the resources. Financial resources are one of the significant resources which can be plays an integral part in the success and growth of the firm. This resource enables the business entity to invest more on the best and contemporar y promotional mediums and platforms, which will develop a great awareness for the product in the market. Also, the entity will be able to hire a potential and expertise level of workforce which will serve the business entity to their best level (Bouchery et al., 2016). Moreover, a good financial stability will enable the business corporation to purchase a high quality of raw materials and which will in-turn will provide them with good quality of finished products. Human resource is the another segment which is also considered as one of the empirical factors in the concept of resource management. Human resource management will serve the business with the outcomes such as the attainment of the desired objectives and targets, increase in the goodwill, and enhancement of brand equity. One of the most valuable assets of the business organization is the workforce and the same is liable and held responsible for the execution of the overall operations and the functionalities. A well-managed human resource will lead the business organization to the gain a competitive advantage over the competitors and a competitive edge in the business environment. And hence the resource management within BHP Billiton can be considered as relevant and responsible factor which contributes in success and growth (Gupta and Starr, 2014). Conclusion In the limelight of the above executed analysis it has been inferred that the operations management is the concept which has been considered as a significant term in the success and growth of the business entity. Washington Irving Essays (3260 words) - The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow

Washington Irving Irving, Washington (1783-1859), American writer, the first American author to achieve international renown, who created the fictional characters Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane. The critical acceptance and enduring popularity of Irving's tales involving these characters proved the effectiveness of the as an American literary form. Born in New York City, Irving studied law at private schools. After serving in several law offices and traveling in Europe for his health from 1804 to 1806, he was eventually admitted to the bar in 1806. His interest in the law was neither deep nor long-lasting, however, and Irving began to contribute satirical essays and sketches to New York newspapers as early as 1802. A group of these pieces, written from 1802 to 1803 and collected under the title Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent., won Irving his earliest literary recognition. From 1807 to 1808 he was the leading figure in a social group that included his brothers William Irving and Peter Irving and William's brother-in-law together they wrote Salmagundi, or, the Whim-Whams and Opinions of Launcelot Langstaff, Esq., and Others, a series of satirical essays and poems on New York society. Irving's contributions to this miscellany established his reputation as an essayist and wit, and this reputation was enhanced by his next work, A History of New York (1809), ostensibly written by Irving's famous comic creation, the Dutch-American scholar Diedrich Knickerbocker. The work is a satirical account of New York State during the period of Dutch occupation (1609-1664); Irving's mocking tone and comical descriptions of early American life counterbalanced the nationalism prevalent in much American writing of the time. Generally considered the first important contribution to American comic literature, and a great popular success from the start, the work brought Irving considerable fame and financial reward. In 1815 Irving went to Liverpool, England, as a silent partner in his brothers' commercial firm. When, after a series of losses, the business went into bankruptcy in 1818, Irving returned to writing for a living. In England he became the intimate friend of several leading men of letters, including. Under the pen name of Geoffrey Crayon, Irving wrote the essays and short stories collected in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. (1819-1820). The Sketch Book, as it is also known, was his most popular work and was widely acclaimed in both England and the United States for its geniality, grace, and humor. The collection's two most famous stories, both based on German folktales, are Rip Van Winkle, about a man who falls asleep in the woods for twenty years, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, about a schoolteacher's encounter with a legendary headless horseman. Set in rural New York, these tales are considered classics in American literature. From 1826 until 1829 Irving was a member of the staff of the United States legation in Madrid. During this period and after his return to England, he wrote several historical works, the most popular of which was the History of Christopher Columbus (1828). Another well-known work of this period was The Alhambra (1832), a series of sketches and stories based on Irving's residence in 1829 in an ancient Moorish palace at Granada, Spain. In 1832, after an absence that lasted 17 years, he returned to the United States, where he was welcomed as a figure of international importance. Over the next few years Irving traveled to the American West and wrote several books using the West as their setting. These works include A Tour on the Prairies (1835), Astoria (1836), and The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, U.S.A. (1837). In 1842 Irving was appointed U.S. minister to Madrid, where he lived until 1846, continuing his historical research and writing. He returned to the United States again in 1846 and settled at Sunnyside, his country home near Tarrytown, New York, where he lived until his death. (Sunnyside is now a historic house and museum.) Irving's popular but elegant style, based on the styles of the British writers Joseph Addison and Oliver Goldsmith, and the ease and picturesque fancy of his best work attracted an international audience. To a certain extent his romantic attachment to Europe resulted in a thinness and overrefinement of material. Much of his work deals directly with English life and customs,

The United States wouldn't enter this war until Japan declared war by destroying their naval base on the Pacific Ocean called Pearl Harbor. It lasted 6 years and ended in1945 with the triumph of the Allies and the use of the atomic bomb for the first time on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Because of Patton's great leadership, the U.S. was able to invade North Africa, capture Sicily and halt the German counter attack in the Battle of Bulge. Patton had a family with a long tradition of military service. His father, George Patton, was the son of a brigadier general in command of the 22d Virginia Regiment who was killed at the Battle of Winchester in the Civil War for the Confederacy. His mother, Ruth Wilson, was the daughter of a savage fighter nicknamed ?Don Benito? who was very well known for once returning from a battle with Indians, with a basket full of the enemies heads. George Smith Patton Junior was born on November 11, 1885 in San Gabriel, California. Even though George grew up on his father ranch, he learned a lot of things. Here he was taught how to hunt, fish, sail, horseback ride and many things about agriculture. His mother was an excellent horsewoman who taught Patton, while his father read to him the works of Homer, Shakespeare and the Holy Bible. All that Patton could learn from his parents was very important because he was not able to begin his formal education until he was 11. There is no known reason to why he couldn't enter any school until he was this old. It has been stated that the cause may have been his dyslexia. Not even the fact that Patton had memorization abilities could get him on educational institutions. ?Patton could quote long passages of books that other students would not dare attempt to read. Though impressive, this ability did not change the fact that he was illiterate.? Patton studied at Dr. Stephen Cotter Clark's Classical School for Boys in Pasadena and then passed on to the Pasadena High School. He had many learning problems and here he learned things that many of the boys his age had learned a long time ago. Patton had many great ideas and made many contributions to the class, but had problems with arithmetic and other important themes. Later on Patton decided to leave this school and was accepted at the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington, VA. Patton had a year of preparation and then was transferred to the respected West Point. He had problems graduating due to his bad grades in French and Math classes, but he finally graduated in 1909 and was given the rank of 2d Lieutenant in the 15th Cavalry. While at West Point, Patton was a very skillful athlete. He played football and was not only characterized for his amazing records, but also for his roughness while playing. He played with so much passion that once he broke both his arms and broke records. He participated in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. His event was the military pentathlon, but he put so much effort in the swimming part that he had to be removed with a boat hook. Patton can be thought of one of the most successful leaders of his time. And he is not only the best general because of his roughness or because of his techniques, but because of his preparation. ?His military career was one of the most colorful of all 20th century military leaders.? Patton's military career was one of the best of every other general in the World War II. When Patton graduated, he was commissioned a second Lieutenant. Later on in 1916, a Mexican bandit called Francisco ?Poncho? Villa was causing some problems to the U.S. and killed

Employee Rights to Privacy at the Workplace Essay

Employee Rights to Privacy at the Workplace - Essay Example The issues of privacy at workplace started off with the use of telephones at the workplace for communication. Mainly meant to achieve the purpose of having employees interact with each other as well as with the outside counterparts, after much debate it was deemed acceptable for employees to use the office phones for personal use, as long as it did not affect workplace efficiency (Gant 127). Body Faster communication, efficient paper-less correspondence, and least costly for the employers, the internet was made a regular feature of the work environment within no time. Internet was not limited to e-mail correspondence too. Organizational Researchers would go online to gather information about competitors, maintain an online presence, and interact with the customers for feedback and suggestions. It has become imperative in today’s day and age to maintain an online presence, thus the initial e-mail correspondence limitation was replaced with round-the-clock internet connectivity at workplace. This gave birth to a new management issue; Ensuring that the employees do not engage in useless surfing while at work (Smith 40). Social networking has gotten almost everyone hooked onto remaining connected with close ones at all times. It is indeed a complex situation to be in as far as managing such a workforce is concerned. Employee monitoring and surveillance goes as far as fixation of cameras behind every desk and installing devices that determine the rate of wiggling on a chair, and whether it breaches the basic employee privacy protection rights, is another debate altogether (Ciocchetti 2). Since our topic is narrowed down to two major technological facilities at workplace, the telephone and the internet, clarifying the two mediums of communications and the purpose they are meant to achieve, needs to discussed first. The Telephone, like mentioned earlier, is a basis of fast and cost effective vocal communication from and within the workplace. A lot of thought we nt into allowing personal calls to be made and it was declared acceptable after sometime. However, cameras installed at workplaces are likely to bring into light any employee who is idling on the phone excessively. The employers are expected to trust the employees not to indulge in inappropriate activities on the phone and, thus, they generally refrain from overhearing or recording calls. This practice is not applicable to every organization due to the difference in nature of work for each. Where small advertising firms can have their employees talking about campaign designs, the central bank of any country can have its employees disclosing important information of policy changes that were discussed in a meeting. The latter will try to hamper such leak of confidential information by making it known to their employees that all phone calls are strictly screened and monitored. The internet, however, is a completely different ballgame. Transfer of information can be discreet and quicker , employees could indulge in cyber stalking which could lead to any form of harassment and a downfall in productivity, using of resources for activities that may bring a bad name to the organization like illegal downloading, embezzlement etc., the possibilities are endless. In a world where every organization goes head to head with each other on the maximum utilization of available resources, the focus has shifted from overall performance to hourly productivity. This means that organizations require their employees to refrain from activities that bring down their productivity level by wasting time (Kesan 289). On the other hand, it is
